About Us

We want to make Shipley a healthier, happier and greener place to live, work and visit. The Shipley Active Travel Hub is a community organisation based in Shipley town centre with a mission to promote more walking, cycling and scooting in the local area – all things that promote our health and wellbeing, and reduce traffic and our carbon footprint.

The Active Travel Hub is a truly community-based organisation. It responds directly to recommendations made by the Shipley Citizens’ Jury – a democratically assembled group of Shipley residents who took part in an eight-week process to come up with proposals on environmental action – and is governed by a consortium of well-known community groups.

The Consortium

Created in April 2020, Shipley Town Council exists to make Shipley an even better place to live. The Town Council provides a range of services, including community events, public toilets and Shipley in Bloom.
The Town Council also supports local organisations (such as the Active Travel Hub) with small grants, and is consulted on town planning matters.

MCF is a Shipley-based charity that promotes restorative justice in prisons ane the community by running workshop where offenders and those at risk of offending clean, adjust and repair old bicycles and wheelchairs, which are then sent on to communities in the UK and overseas.
The majority of the Shipley Active Travel Hub’s activities are run from MCF’s premises at Windsor Court, in Shipley town centre. MCF also supplies bikes for our cycling lessons and workshops.

Capital of Cycling was born in 2017 out of a coalition of cycling organisations, to bring together all the wonderful work being done to promote cycling in Bradford. They organise a range of events in the local area, from adult cycling lessons in various locations around the city, to maintenance classes and drop in sessions for the general public and people seeking refuge. Capital of Cycling runs most of the adult cycling lessons that take place from the Shipley Active Travel Hub, as well as providing vital HR, administrative and fundraising support.

The Kirkgate Centre is a busy community and social action centre serving Shipley. Their aim is to improve the quality of life of all in the local community. The Kirkgate Centre has a busy calendar of events where people can learn new skills and build positive relationships with other members of their local community.
It also provides vital support to other local community organisations, such as the Shipley Active Travel Hub, with spaces for meetings and events.

Who We Are

Adrian: Manager
Adrian joined the Shipley Active Travel Hub in April 2023 to oversee all areas of its work: organising events and activities, representing the Hub in the community, impact monitoring, financial and administrative management, marketing and outreach, and running workshop activities. With equal amounts of work experience in fixing bikes as he does in working for charities, Adrian was excited to return to Shipley to build on all of the walking and cycling opportunities the area has to offer, from the local canal towpath to the nearby Yorkshire Dales.

Darren: Workshop
Darren works for both Capital of Cycling and the Margaret Carey Foundation, and runs maintenance sessions with a number of youth groups from the workshop in Windsor Court. As a Shipley native and experienced bike mechanic, Darren has been instrumental in the set-up and renovation of the Windsor Court building, and provides ongoing operational support to the Active Travel Hub.

Liz: Cycling Instructor
Liz works for Capital of Cycling as the lead instructor for all cycling lessons across the Bradford District. As a Shipley resident, and a highly experienced cycling instructor, she organises and runs all of our adult cycling lessons at the Shipley Active Travel Hub as well! If you have any questions about our cycling lessons, you can email her directly at liz@capitalofcycling.org
